In Schaumburg, where I grew up, it wasn’t really cool to be Jewish. There were so few of us (about 10, maybe, in my high school of almost 3,000), that it was usually a surprise if people could just get the terms right.
“You mean you don’t speak Hanukkah?”
“You don’t eat cheese with meat…so you’re vegan, right?”
“But how can you not have learned about Jesus?”
Oy. All things I have heard while living in Schaumburg during my formative years. Keep in mind, Schaumburg is a Chicago suburb with 75,000+ people.
